MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT :: Celebration was the first large-scale new-town development that brought the principles of New Urbanism into the mainstream, thanks to its acclaim as a Disney venture and its economic success. Once considered a boutique housing niche, this planning philosophy that mixes residential, retail, office and civic uses in a compact, walkable community has gained wide acceptance with builders and buyers. It remains, however, a complicated segment to get right, as illustrated by the many less impressive examples that have disregarded the need for rigorous architectural and governance controls.
